Bharat Ratna Award 2024: In January, the Government of India announced Bharat Ratna awardees, including former Chief Minister of Bihar, Jannayak Karpoori Thakur, and former Deputy Prime Minister Lal Krishna Advani. Subsequently, the Central Government also announced Bharat Ratna for former Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh, PV Narasimha Rao, and scientist MS Swaminathan.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared this information through a post on X (Twitter). With these additions, the total number of Bharat Ratna recipients stands at 53.

In 1954, former President Sarvepalli, Dr. Radhakrishnan, Dr. Chandrashekhar Venkata Raman, and the first Governor General of independent India, Chakravarti Rajagopalachari, were honoured with Bharat Ratna.
In 1955, Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, former Prime Minister of India Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru, and Dr. Bhagwan Das received the Bharat Ratna Award.
Following them, Pandit Govind Vallabh Pant was honoured in 1957, and Dr. Dhondo Keshav Karve in 1958.
Purushottam Das Tandon and Bidhan Chandra Roy were honoured in 1961. Dr. Rajendra Prasad received the Bharat Ratna in 1962, followed by former President Dr. Zakir Hussain and Dr. Pandurang Vaman Kane in 1963.
In 1966, former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna. In 1971, former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi received the Bharat Ratna award. VV Giri was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1975, while K. Kamaraj was posthumously awarded in 1976. Social worker Mother Teresa received the Bharat Ratna in 1980.
Acharya Vinova Bhave was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1983, followed by Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan in 1987 and Manidur Gopalan Ramachandran posthumously in 1988.
In 1990, Dr. Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela and Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar (posthumously) of South Africa were awarded the Bharat Ratna.
In 1991, former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi (posthumously), Morarji Ranchodji Desai, and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel (posthumously) were honoured.
In 1992, Satyajit Ray was posthumously awarded, along with Jehangir Ratanji Dadabhoy Tata and Maulana Abul Kalam Azad.
In 1997, Aruna Asaf Ali (posthumously), Gulzari Lal Nanda (posthumously), and former President Dr. Abdul Kalam Azad were honoured.
In 1998, Madurai Shanmukhavadivu Subbalakshmi, Chidambaram Subramaniam, and Gopinath Bordoloi (posthumously) were awarded the Bharat Ratna.
In 1999, Jayaprakash Narayan (posthumously), Prof. Amartya Sen, and Pandit Ravi Shankar were honoured.
In 2001, Ustad Bismillah Khan and Ms. Lata Dinanath Mangeshkar were awarded the Bharat Ratna. In 2009, Pandit Bhimsen Gururaj Joshi was honored.
In 2014, Indian cricket’s star batsman Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar and Professor Chintamani Nagesa Ramachandra Rao received the Bharat Ratna. In 2015, former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya (posthumously) were honoured.
In 2019, former President of India Pranab Mukherjee, Dr. Bhupendra Kumar Hazarika (posthumously), and Nanaji Deshmukh (posthumously) were awarded the Bharat Ratna.
Adding to this legacy, in 2024, former Chief Minister of Bihar Jannayak Karpuri Thakur, former Deputy Prime Minister LK Advani, former Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh, PV Narasimha Rao, and scientist MS Swaminathan will be honoured with Bharat Ratna.
