One such remarkable individual is Baljeet Kaur, hailing from Delhi, who has achieved extraordinary feats in mountaineering. Baljeet Kaur, a native of a quaint village in Kandaghat tehsil, Solan district, Himachal Pradesh, embarked on her mountaineering journey at the tender age of 19. Born to Amrik Singh, a bus driver with the Himachal Pradesh Transport Corporation, and Shanti Devi, she grew up amidst humble beginnings, assisting her mother in farming alongside her three siblings. Baljeet juggled her studies with farming duties, displaying remarkable perseverance and dedication.

Setting numerous records, Baljeet’s achievements are awe-inspiring. In an interview with the Local 18 team, she recounted her humble beginnings, admitting her initial lack of knowledge about mountaineering. However, her journey took a decisive turn when she learned about the opportunity for 10 girls from across India to be selected as mountaineers in 2015, although it didn’t materialize for her at the time.
Undeterred, she commenced her mountaineering career in 2021. Her first conquest was Mount Pamori, where she became the youngest woman in India to achieve such a feat. Subsequently, in the same year, she scaled Holagiri, becoming the first young Indian woman to do so. Her crowning achievements came in 2022 when she conquered five peaks over 8,000 meters, including Annapurna, Kanchenjunga, Everest, Lhotse, and Makalu, all within a span of 30 days. Baljeet takes immense pride in being the first Indian woman to accomplish this remarkable feat.
Expressing her concern over the lack of recognition for mountaineering as a sport in India, Baljeet Kaur appealed to the government, advocating for its promotion and support akin to other sports. She emphasized the importance of acknowledging and categorizing mountaineers, providing them with the recognition they deserve. Baljeet’s unwavering determination and advocacy serve as an inspiration to aspiring mountaineers, demonstrating that with perseverance and support, even the loftiest summits can be conquered.
