The preview for the well-known musical Wicked was shown during the Super Bowl this Sunday. This two-part musical is directed by Jon M Chu, with a script by Winnie Holzman and Stephen Schwartz. The movie is based on Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel, “Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West,” and stars Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo, and Michelle Yeoh.
In the story, Ariana plays Glinda the Good, and Cynthia plays Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West with green skin. They become closer as Glinda looks beyond Elphaba’s appearance. Elphaba admits something takes over her, causing bad things, and Madame Morrible advises her to control her emotions for limitless possibilities, as the sky is the limit.
The movie’s events happen before Dorothy’s Oz adventures and are more aligned with the Broadway musical inspired by the novel. It delves into the origin of both witches, with Elphaba declaring, “It’s the Wizard who should be afraid of me,” hinting at a crucial plot. The trailer gives a quick glimpse of Dorothy.
Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Bowen Yang, and Jeff Goldblum play Fiyero Tigelaar, Boq, Pfannee, and the Wizard of Oz. Jeff’s Wizard suggests that uniting people requires a common enemy, hinting that Elphaba might be that foe.
Wicked is known not just for its story but also for its catchy songs like Defying Gravity, Popular, and The Wizard and I. The first part of Wicked will be on screens later this year, and the second part is expected next year.
