The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has introduced an updated film certification system. The new system is designed to help parents make more informed decisions about what content is suitable for their children, like violence, intimacy, horror, or mature themes.
The new system introduces five distinct categories, that is ‘U’, ‘UA 7+’, ‘UA 13+’, ‘UA 16+’, and ‘A’. According to the reports, the updated certification system became effective from October 24, 2024. According to CBFC, the updated classification films are divided into 5 categories as U (Unrestricted), UA 7+, UA 13+, UA 16+, AND A (Adults).
The U (Unrestricted) category is designed for all age groups. UA 7+ (Unrestricted) category is suitable for children below 7 years old. UA 13+ (Unrestricted) is suitable for children below 13 years old. UA 16+ (Unrestricted) is suitable for children below 16 years. A (Adults) is restricted to individuals aged 18 and above.
CBFC board members revealed that the updated classification system had been in the works for years, aiming to better categorize films. This new structure ensures that films are not all grouped under a single category.
If any parent wishes to expose their children of less than the recommended age, they are cautioned to take due care by knowing more about the movie and decide whether to allow their child to see the film, considering the nature of their child.
