The Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that Veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty (74) will achieve ‘Dadasaheb Phalke Award’ at the 70th National Film Award Ceremony on 8th October by the Indian Govt.
Mithun Chakraborty born in Kolkata. He started his cinematic journey with the 1976 film ‘Mrigayaa’ and won the National Film Award for Best Actor. He was honoured with two more National Film Awards for his roles in ‘Tahader Katha’ (1992) and Swami Vivekananda (1998).
He became a household name after playing the titular role in the 1982 film, ‘Disco Dancer’, which became a huge box-office success. He often appears on reality shows as a judge.
In a post on X, Ashwini Vaishnaw said that Mithun Chakraborty will be awarded during the 70th National Film Awards Ceremony on 8th October. The minister also lauded the actor, saying his remarkable cinematic journey inspires generations.
He wrote on X,”Mithun Da’s remarkable cinematic journey inspires generation! Honoured to announce that the Dadasaheb Phalke selection jury has decided to award legendary actor, Sh. Mithun Chakraborty Ji for his iconic contribution to Indian Cinema. To be presented at the 70th National Film Awards Ceremony. On 8th October 2024”.
Reacting to the big achievement, Mithun Chakraborty told ANI, “I have no language to express how I feel. Na main haas sakta hun, na Khushi mein ro sakta hun (I cannot smile, nor can I cry in happiness). I come from the bylanes of Kolkata, a boy from such a place winning such an honour… I could not have imagined this. I am extremely happy. I dedicated this to my family and my fans across the World”.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the actor and said, “Delighted that Shri Mithun Chakraborty Ji has been conferred the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award recognizing his unparalleled contributions to Indian Cinema. He is a cultural icon, admired across generations for his versatile performances. Congratulations and best wishes to him (sic)”.
Mithun Chakraborty will be the 54th winner of the Dadasaheb Phalke Award which was instituted in 1969 in honour of Dadasaheb Phalke. 53 people have received the award so far. Actor Waheeda Rehman received the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2021.
