Satyashodhak Samaj – Connection With History

The movie Satyashodhak gets its name from the “Satyashodhak Samaj,” a group started by Jyotiba Phule in Pune in 1873. This group wanted to improve education, social rights, justice, and political opportunities for people who were often left out. The film mainly talks about how Jyotiba and Savitribai Phule were important in leading social efforts for women within the Satyashodhak Samaj, especially focusing on helping Dalits, Shudras, and women in Maharashtra.

Mahatma Phule and wife Savitribai

Mahatma Jyotirao Phule, often referred to as Jyotiba, was born in 1827 in Pune, India. A leading social reformer who strongly opposed the caste system prevalent in society during his time. He challenged the dominance of Brahmins and advocated for the rights of peasants and marginalized communities. His contributions were in the field of education for  social progress and equality.

He and his wife, Savitribai Phule, played instrumental roles in establishing schools for girls and children from lower castes. Their efforts were groundbreaking, considering the prevailing norms of that era.
