Bollywood actress Sonam Kapoor and her businessman husband Anand Ahuja have made headlines once again, this time for acquiring one of Mumbai’s most iconic properties—Rhythm House. The couple recently purchased the historic building in Kala Ghoda, Mumbai, for a whopping ₹47.8 crore. This acquisition marks not just a significant real estate investment but also a nod to the city’s rich cultural heritage, as Rhythm House was once the epicenter of music and entertainment in Mumbai.

According to Bloomberg, the couple’s Bhane Group bought the 3,600-square-foot Rhythm House for Rs 478.4 million (approx. Rs 47.8 crore) in 2018 when Nirav Modi, owner of music store Firestar Diamond International Pvt failed to raise billions of dollars in bank loans had been shut down.

What is this rhythm house exactly?

It used to be one of those first music stores in Bombay which sold cassettes, CD and vinyl records of the international artists when their albums were released. Nothing like that existed in Bombay during late 80s and 90s. It’s located in Kala Ghoda which is Bombay’s art district that houses art galleries, Indian designer stores, chic cafes and restaurants. To own a store in such a niche market is a big deal. The same building in which rhythm house is located also houses brands like Abu jani, Kunal rawal, and jaywalking and is surrounded by Anita Dongre, Shantanu & Nikhil, and the ilks of it. It’s a super trendy and hip area of Bombay.

For decades, Rhythm House was an essential destination for music lovers, including vinyl records, cassettes and CDs. Founded in 1948, the music store has become a cultural focal point in the city’s vibrant art horse district. Generations of music enthusiasts flocked to Rhythm House for Indian compilations, Bollywood hits and international collections. It wasn’t just a place to buy music; It was a place where people came together over a shared passion for music.

Unfortunately, with the advent of digital music and streaming services, the shop couldn’t compete with modern technology and closed its doors in 2016. Since then, the building has been empty, though the Mumbaikar has a different place in in the hearts of many.

Reflecting Indo-European characteristics, the building adds historical charm, making it a coveted heritage site. The store’s closure was seen as the end of an era, but now Sonam Kapoor and Anand Ahuja’s purchase has sparked renewed interest in the property’s future.

While the future of Rhythm House is yet to be revealed, its purchase by such a creative and culturally-conscious couple suggests that its legacy is in safe hands. Fans of the couple, as well as lovers of Mumbai’s history, eagerly await the transformation of Rhythm House, hoping that it will once again become a beacon of culture and art in the bustling city of Mumbai.
