‘Chhaava’ Faces Backlash Over Historical Misrepresentation: Vicky Kaushal’s historical drama Chhaava continues its successful box office run but has landed in controversy. Descendants of Ganoji and Kanhoji Shirke have alleged that the film distorts history by portraying their ancestors as traitors. They claim that both figures were, in reality, loyal warriors of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. Following these allegations, director Laxman Utekar has issued an apology, attempting to clarify the film’s depiction.

Shirke Family Raises Objections

The Shirke family demanded a public apology from the filmmakers, stating that the misrepresentation of their ancestors damages their historical legacy. Bhushan Shirke, a descendant, directly approached Laxman Utekar, urging him to address the issue.

Laxman Utekar Responds with an Apology

In response, Utekar explained that the film does not explicitly mention the surnames or native villages of Ganoji and Kanhoji. He emphasized that the intent was not to offend any community. Speaking to Bhushan Shirke via phone, he said, “I have seen your press conference and messages. I sincerely apologize if the film has hurt anyone’s sentiments. Our intention was never to misrepresent historical facts.”

Shirke Family Threatens Legal Action

Despite Utekar’s apology, the Shirke family remains dissatisfied. Laxmikant Raje Shirke, the 13th-generation descendant of Ganoji and Kanhoji, has announced plans to take legal action against the filmmakers. He stated, “We have sent a legal notice and will file a ₹100 crore defamation suit if our ancestors are not portrayed correctly.”

Police Complaint and Potential Protests

In addition to legal threats, the Shirke family has lodged a complaint with the Pune Police Commissioner. They have demanded modifications in the film and warned of large-scale protests across Maharashtra if their concerns are not addressed.
