The much-awaited movie Bhakshak, featuring Bhumi Pednekar, produced by Shah Rukh Khan’s Red Chillies Entertainment, is now available for streaming. The movie is based on a true story about widespread abuse in a shelter home in Muzaffarpur, Bihar. It starts with a shocking incident and ends with a lecture, which might give you a moment of thought.
The plot follows Vaishali Singh, played by Bhumi Pednekar, a small-scale video journalist, and her cameraman Bhaskar Sinha, played by Sanjay Mishra. They stumble upon a report raising concerns about a girls’ shelter home in Munnawarpur, a thinly disguised name for the actual location. Initially hesitant, Vaishali becomes determined to investigate further. The investigation primarily involves visiting state-run shelters across the state and posing uncomfortable questions.
The evidence in the movie points to the sinister Bansi Sahu, played by Aditya Srivastava, who runs the shelter with the help of a dreadful trio: a female warden preying on the girls and two ruthless men managing them, even disposing of bodies when needed. This mirrors the real-life case accurately. A helpful female cop assists Vaishali, but there are limits, leaving Vaishali to carry the burden alone.
The film also delves into Vaishali’s personal life, dealing with an angry husband upset about her late nights, highlighting the challenges women face in pursuing their desires. While this subplot provides some relief from the intense storyline, it extends the film’s duration. Pednekar puts in a sincere effort to make her character believable. The monologue tries to awaken the consciousness of society.
