58th Jnanpith Award 2023

The Jnanpith Award, established in 1944, is presented by Bharatiya Jnanpith. It acknowledges individuals for their significant literary contributions. The Jnanpith selection committee stated that the award for 2023 would be given to eminent writers in two languages: Sanskrit litterateur Jagadguru Rambhadracharya and Urdu litterateur Gulzar, also known as Sampooran Singh Kalra. The award is bestowed for the second time in the Sanskrit language and the fifth time in the Urdu language.

Prizemoney

The prize for the award includes ₹21 lakh, a Vagdevi statue, and a citation.

Shashi Tharoor Applauds

Shashi Tharoor a parlimentarian, praised Gulzar for his exceptional contributions to Urdu poetry, deeming the award well-deserved. Tharoor tweeted, “Warmest congratulations to Gulzar Sahib on winning India’s highest literary award for lifetime achievement, the Jnanpith Award, for his extraordinary services to Urdu poetry. Richly deserved!”

About Gulzar

Gulzar, aged 89, is renowned for his work in Hindi cinema. He is considered a prominent Urdu poet, his poetry can be seen anywhere in social media or any other platform. Gulzar has previously been honored with the Sahitya Akademi Award for Urdu (2002), the Dadasaheb Phalke Award (2013), and the Padma Bhushan (2004). Additionally, he has received at least five National Film Awards for his contributions to cinema.

Gulzar’s Work

His notable works include the song “Jai Ho” from Slumdog Millionaire, which won an Oscar in 2009 and a Grammy in 2010. Gulzar has also directed acclaimed films such as Koshish (1972), Parichay (1972), Mausam (1975), Ijaazat (1977), and the TV series Mirza Ghalib (1988).

About Jagadguru Rambhadracharya

Rambhadracharya, aged 74, is a well-known Hindu spiritual leader, educator, and prolific writer. He wrote over 240 books, including four epics. He founded and led Tulsi Peeth in Chitrakoot. Rambhadracharya ji has held the position of one of the four Jagadguru Ramanandacharyas in the Ramananda sect since 1982. He is fluent in 22 languages, writing poetry in Sanskrit, Hindi, Awadhi, and Maithili.

At birth, he was known as Giridhara Misra. Despite losing his eyesight two months after birth due to trachoma, he excelled academically. He memorized the Bhagwad Gita by age five and the entire Ramcharitmanas by eight. In 2015, Rambhadracharya received the Padma Vibhushan Award for his significant contributions.
