The “PM Surya Ghar– Muft Bijli Yojana” scheme has been launched by Prime Minister Modi. It is a flagship project initiated under the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. The scheme aims to provide free electricity to households across the nation. PM Modi officially inaugurated the scheme on February 15, 2024, with the anticipation of significant benefits for rural communities.
PM Surya Ghar– Muft Bijli Yojana is a subsidy scheme designed to encourage the installation of solar panels on rooftops. Under this scheme, a subsidy of 40 percent will be provided for the installation of solar panels. It is estimated that around 1 crore households will benefit from this initiative. The government has allocated Rs 75,000 crore annually for the implementation of this scheme.
The ideal size of the solar panel depends on the monthly electricity consumption of the household
- For households with a monthly electricity consumption of up to 150 units, a 1 to 2 kW solar panel is recommended, with a subsidy ranging from Rs 30,000 to Rs 60,000.
- For households consuming between 150 to 300 units per month, installing a 2 to 3 kW solar panel is advised, with a subsidy of 60 to 78 thousand rupees.
