The most precious and significant natural resource on Earth is water. All life is sustained by it. Without water, life cannot exist. It is, therefore, quite important to save water. Water is essential to the environment as a whole, not just to humans. It is nearly hard for humans or animals to survive without enough water. Water is the second most essential natural resource for any living thing to survive, after fresh air.

All life on Earth, whether it be a tiny worm, a plant, or a mature tree, depends on water to survive. Without water, plants and animals cannot thrive. Water covers over 71% of the surface of the Earth. Sadly, freshwater makes up only 3% of the total amount of water. Freshwater is found mostly frozen in the form of ice caps and glaciers. Surface water and groundwater make up the remaining small percentage.

Water is absolutely necessary to us for a variety of reasons. Crops are irrigated with water in agriculture. Water is used in our homes for drinking, cooking, cleaning, and other uses. There are recreational uses for water. Water is utilised in industries as a solvent, coolant, and for various production processes. Water is used to generate hydroelectricity. Moreover, shipping and freight transportation both need water. This explains why water is the most necessary element for life and how each drop of water is necessary for survival. Water conservation is, therefore, crucial to preserving life as we know it.

Save Water: Importance of Water

  1. Water is essential for drinking, bathing, farming, irrigation, hospitality, factories, and other uses.
  2. Water enhances the body’s metabolism and aids with blood circulation.
  3. There is water surrounding the whole aquatic habitat. It serves as the habitat for all aquatic life.
  4. After land and air, water is a significant means of transportation.
  5. Saliva production and the supply of oxygen to our body’s cells are aided by water.

Freshwater depletion is becoming a hazard to human survival. Some scientists claim that both the amount and quality of water are decreasing daily. Despite the fact that over 71% of Earth is covered in water, humans are unable to use it for household needs on a daily basis. Some areas have such low water quality that residents are vulnerable to a number of water-borne illnesses, including Eluru, which is brought on by tainted water. These are shocking examples that call for careful consideration in order to improve living conditions for both the present and upcoming generations.

The Causes of the Shortage of Freshwater are Listed Below:

  1. Overuse of water is a result of population growth.
  2. Unnecessary water waste on a daily basis.
  3. The issue of properly disposing of garbage from industries has grown due to their fast growth. The highly toxic substances found in the waste products from these companies are contaminating the rivers and other bodies of water.
  4. Fresh water is contaminated by chemical fertilizers and pesticides used in crop treatment.
  5. When sewage waste is poured into rivers, it contaminates the water, making it unsafe to drink or use for washing. This can lead to cholera, jaundice, and typhoid.
  6. The use of plastics and their reckless disposal in water bodies are having an adverse effect on aquatic life and are further upsetting the environment as a whole.
  7. Another significant factor contributing to the planet’s water shortage is global warming. Numerous studies indicate that until 2050, the world will experience increased stress due to water scarcity as a result of global warming.

It is now necessary for us to recognize the depletion of freshwater and take appropriate action to halt it.

Saving Water: The Need of the Hour

Due to exceptionally severe weather that causes less rainfall and groundwater depletion, many areas experience severe water scarcity. Groundwater is either overused or useless in other parts of the earth. Water scarcity results from the overuse of groundwater brought on by the expanding global population, industries, and globalization.

Data from the World Health Organisation (WHO) indicates that a large number of people worldwide lack access to fresh, clean drinking water. These circumstances are getting worse every day, so we urgently need to come up with a plan to deal with them. To reduce water scarcity, every person on the earth and every nation’s government must adopt a variety of collective actions.

The government ought to enact stringent regulations to promote water conservation. To raise awareness and encourage “conservation of water,” it is up to the government and the people to take the initiative. The Indian Modi government launched a number of initiatives, one of which was “JANSHAKTI FOR JALSHAKTI.” The initial goal of this plan was to work towards a more promising future.

Some State Government Initiatives to Save Water

  1. The Punjab government fixed the leak in the drain and prevented waterlogging, which helped conserve water resources.
  2. The Rajasthani people benefited greatly from the little ponds that the government of Rajasthan built on their own initiative.
  3. Telangana villages have built water tanks to store rainfall for later use.

These states should serve as an example to others, encouraging them to take action to protect and purify the environment, including groundwater and water bodies.

Everyone who lives on our planet has a global responsibility to save water. There are numerous strategies to conserve water and lessen pollution:

  1. Do your part to conserve water every day. Don’t waste water; just use what’s necessary. Water usage should be prudent.
  2. When washing garments, we ought to fill the washing machine to the brim.
  3. When cleaning our faces and hands, we shouldn’t let the tap run.
  4. To reduce evaporation, we should water plants in the early morning or evening.
  5. We ought to put in place systems for collecting and reusing rainfall on rooftops for domestic usage.
  6. Rather than being dumped into waterways, industrial waste needs to be properly processed.
  7. Plastics should no longer be used, and they should be disposed of properly.
  8. We may use social media campaigns and other strategies to educate people about the issues around water.
  9. Water conservation should be instilled in our kids from a young age.
  10. Farmers and larger communities should adjust to the habit of collecting rainwater.
  11. One of the most significant ways to conserve water and avoid water scarcity is to reuse it. Recycled bath water can be utilized for cleaning or gardening.
  12. The practice of collecting rainwater and storing it for later use is known as rainwater harvesting.
  13. Another crucial strategy for protecting groundwater and utilizing it in the future is conservation.
  14. Prevention of water logging.
