Sanya Malhotra’s ‘Mrs’ Under Fire for Alleged Gender Bias: Bollywood actress Sanya Malhotra’s latest OTT release, Mrs, has sparked controversy after the men’s rights group, Save Indian Family Foundation (SIFF), accused the film of promoting a biased feminist perspective. According to SIFF, while the film highlights women’s struggles in patriarchal marriages, it ignores the hardships faced by men, children, and senior citizens within family dynamics.
The organization voiced its concerns on social media platform X, stating, “Men’s issues are addressed in only 20% of policies governing vulnerable groups, while 80% paint a very different picture.” In a series of posts, SIFF criticized the film for allegedly reinforcing a one-sided feminist ideology while neglecting broader family issues.
One of SIFF’s posts read, “Men should not share a 50-50 in domestic work; 70-80% of material goods, clothes, furniture, and gadgets are sought and enjoyed by women.” Another post questioned household chores, stating, “Is cooking meditative? Why would pressing clothes or using a washing machine cause stress?” These statements led to a fierce online debate, with many users challenging SIFF’s stance, while others supported their concerns.
What is ‘Mrs’ About?
Directed by Arati Kadav, Mrs stars Sanya Malhotra as Richa, an aspiring dancer who finds herself trapped in a patriarchal household after marriage. The film portrays her struggles against societal expectations and humiliation, eventually leading to her empowerment. The Krety-Up production is a remake of the Malayalam film The Great Indian Kitchen and also features Nishant Dahiya and Kanwaljit Singh in pivotal roles. The film is currently streaming on Zee5.
The controversy surrounding Mrs continues to fuel discussions on gender roles and societal norms, with divided opinions on whether the film fairly represents all vulnerable groups.
