India’s rising star in international cinema, “All We Imagine as Light,” faces an underwhelming release in its home country, sparking disappointment from renowned actor Siddharth.
Despite garnering major international accolades, including the prestigious Grand Prix at Cannes, Pail Kapaadia’s “All We Imagine as Light” has failed to receive significant attention in India. Siddharth voiced his dismay over this lack of exposure, even stating that the film would likely not be seen by Indian audiences.
Siddharth pointed out in an interview that Pail Kapaadia’s past interview revealed her frustration over the film’s domestic reception. “My film was released, and no one showed up. They had to cancel shows. If you want to watch it, you’ll need to campaign for a show,” she had expressed.
Despite winning major awards like Cannes’ Grand Prix and being part of the official competition, the film didn’t reach the Indian public. Siddharth emphasized that the film’s international success doesn’t necessarily translate into domestic recognition. “The producers think it was a huge success, but the audience will never get a chance to see the film they consider good,” he said.
“All We Imagine as Light” premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May, making history as the first Indian film to be included in the main competition in nearly 30 years. It went on to win the second-biggest award, the Grand Prix, becoming the first Indian film in almost 70 years to win this prestigious honor.
Following its Cannes triumph, the film has continued to receive accolades at other prestigious events, including the Chicago International Film Festival, Gotham Awards, and the Golden Globes. It has also earned nominations and awards at numerous renowned film festivals like the New York Film Critics Circle and the Los Angeles Film Critics Association.
Both the direction by Pail Kapaadia and the performances by Kanika Kusuruti and Divya Prabha have garnered widespread praise on international platforms. The film is set to be released on the OTT platform Disney Plus Hotstar on December 3rd, offering a chance for global audiences to experience its brilliance.
