In a surprising turn of events, Madalsa Sharma, who portrayed the bold and independent character Kavya in the popular TV show Anupamaa, has decided to exit the show after four years. Her departure follows on the heels of Sudhanshu Pandey’s exit, who played Vanraj. The actress opened up about her reasons for leaving the show, citing the fading relevance of her character.
Kavya’s Role in Anupamaa
When Madalsa Sharma joined Anupamaa in 2020, the storyline revolved around three pivotal characters – Anupamaa (played by Rupali Ganguly), Vanraj (played by Sudhanshu Pandey), and Kavya. Kavya’s character initially created significant turbulence in Anupamaa’s life, bringing plenty of twists and drama. Kavya’s bold and independent nature, particularly her relationship with the married Vanraj, made her one of the central figures in the show.
In an interview with Times of India, Madalsa shared, “Kavya was initially shown as a strong, independent woman who had the guts to fall in love with a married man. Over time, the character developed beautifully. However, in the past year, I felt that the story had moved beyond the trio of Anupamaa, Vanraj, and Kavya.”
Creative Challenges and Exit Decision
Despite the early success of Kavya’s character, Madalsa noted that the storyline had shifted focus, and her character no longer had the same importance. She expressed her concerns that Kavya’s role lacked the spice and drama it once had, and even though the creative team tried to bring something fresh to her character, nothing seemed to click.
“The creative team had been trying to do something different with my character over the past few months, but it just didn’t work. Rajan Shahi sir (the producer) and I mutually agreed that it was time for me to move on,” Madalsa revealed.
Support from Family
Madalsa, who is married to Mimoh Chakraborty, son of Bollywood legend Mithun Chakraborty, disclosed that her family fully supported her decision to leave the show. “My mother, husband, and father-in-law believed that if I wanted to take on new work and explore other opportunities, I should move forward,” she said.

As Madalsa steps away from Anupamaa, fans are curious about her future projects. While she hasn’t disclosed her next move, her departure marks a significant change for the show’s dynamics, as her character was an integral part of several high-voltage plotlines.
