Asit Kumar Modi, the man behind the long-running sitcom Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah, finally broke his silence after a year of whispers and accusations. The show, which has kept Indian households entertained for 17 years, has recently faced turbulent times. In 2023, serious claims emerged from former cast members, ranging from misconduct on set to unpaid dues. As the headlines swirled, Modi chose silence. Until now.
In an exclusive conversation with SCREEN, the producer opened up about the storm. For a man often described as deeply involved with his cast and crew, the allegations struck a chord. He admitted that the criticism has hurt him. “I have never detached myself from the actors. If there is any issue, they can always contact me,” he said, making it clear that he’s always tried to be accessible.
Modi insisted that his intentions have always been transparent. He shared that the show was never about personal gain for him. “I have always been very honest and kept the show first. I have never thought of any personal gains,” he said with quiet determination. The weight of the accusations, he added, does upset him, but he accepts them as part of life.
Addressing the voices of those who had once been part of the TMKOC family and are now critics, he remained calm. According to him, even if they had spoken against him, he had no plans to respond with bitterness. “Actors who have left have been saying things against me. It’s okay. I will not say anythingto them,” he remarked, choosing grace over retaliation. He acknowledged their contributions to the show’s success and referred to TMKOC as a collective journey. “Even though I led it, the show became popular due to everyone’s efforts,” he said, emphasizing teamwork over individual credit.
Using a striking metaphor, he likened the journey of the show to a moving train. Some compartments may derail, he said, but the engine keeps going. This was his way of explaining that while setbacks happen, the bigger vision remains intact. He admitted that he does feel bad when things go wrong, but he chooses forgiveness over holding grudges. “If I hold a grudge in my heart, I won’t be happy and won’t be able to make people laugh,” he explained, showing how personal peace is vital to the work he does.
Talking about what continues to make TMKOC a household name even after so many years, Modi said the magic lies in collaboration. The show’s popularity wasn’t built in isolation. Everyone’s sincerity played a role. He shared how he tries to keep the team united and reduce problems by fostering a good environment. In his view, when the people working behind the scenes are dedicated, friction automatically reduces.
But the question that fans continue to ask, when will Daya Bhabhi return? Modi didn’t avoid it. He agreed with the viewers who say the show hasn’t felt the same since she left. “People do complain that they don’t enjoy the show ever since Daya Bhabhi left, and I agree,” he said. However, there is hope. “I will bring back Daya Bhabhi soon,” he promised.
While the character’s return is eagerly awaited, the uncertainty around Disha Vakani remains. Modi revealed that she’s still very much like family to him. He said that her family responsibilities make it hard for her to return, but he respects her choices. “She is like my younger sister, and we are like family even today,” he shared warmly. Even though she might not be able to come back, he has started looking for someone who can do justice to the beloved role. “We aim to find someone just like Disha Vakani,” he added.
It’s been five years since Daya Bhabhi left, but her spirit remains alive on the sets and in the hearts of fans. For Modi, the mission is clear, keep the train running, honor the past, and bring joy to millions.
