The 2011 television show Bade Achhe Lagte Hain, featuring Ram Kapoor and Sakshi Tanwar, became a monumental hit on Sony TV. Among its many moments, an intimate scene between the two leads caused quite a stir, marking television’s first on-screen kiss. Recently, Ram Kapoor revisited the topic in a candid conversation with Siddharth Kannan, shedding light on the controversy and the events behind the scenes.

Ram revealed that the show’s producer, Ekta Kapoor, bore the brunt of the backlash. “Ekta was the one who had to apologise. I didn’t,” he explained, asserting that his role as an actor was solely to execute the script. He emphasized the professionalism he maintained, saying his responsibility was to act as per the script he had signed for. Refusing to shy away from his duties, he remarked, “If the scene is written, I can’t say no. That would mean I’m not an actor, just a star with tantrums.”

He disclosed that he had questioned Ekta twice about the decision, given its novelty on Indian television. Ram asked if she was absolutely sure about incorporating the scene, noting the potential sensitivity, as television is a medium consumed by entire families spanning generations. However, Ekta stood firm in her decision, confident in the impact and necessity of the scene. Trusting her judgment, Ram agreed to proceed.

Seeking support and clarity, Ram first turned to his wife for her opinion. She left the decision to him, providing her full backing. He also approached Sakshi Tanwar and assured her that if she felt uncomfortable, he would address the matter with Ekta. Sakshi, however, had no reservations. Ram then went a step further by speaking with Sakshi’s father, who gave his blessing with the words, “Ram, if you’re there, everything will be fine.” These affirmations gave both actors the confidence to approach the scene with professionalism and ease.

The shoot, which spanned two nights, was far from awkward for the two co-stars. Ram highlighted their mutual respect and camaraderie, which remained intact despite the demands of the scene. He credited their strong bond for making the process seamless, noting that the situation never caused discomfort between them.

After the scene aired, it ignited a wave of controversy. Families across the country debated the bold move, with many criticizing the inclusion of such content on television. The uproar placed Ekta Kapoor at the center of the storm. Ram clarified that the concept and execution were entirely Ekta’s ideas, and he and Sakshi simply adhered to the script. “It wasn’t our idea. It was hers. We just did our job,” he stated.

Reflecting on the episode, Ram shared that he has no regrets about filming the scene, believing he upheld his commitment as an actor. Despite the backlash, the moment remains a pivotal part of the show’s legacy. Ram’s recount of the incident underscores the dedication and professionalism required to navigate sensitive moments in the entertainment industry, leaving an indelible mark on television history.

Later Ekta Kapoor took it to the Instagram and without naming anyone she shared a post, “In her Instagram story, Ekta wrote: “Non-professional actors should keep quiet from giving interviews about my show! Misinformation and false stories. This will go on till I say something… but there is dignity in silence.” However, fans are anticipating it to be a dig on Ram Kapoor for his remark.

This regenerates a new debate.
