Google is taking its AI-powered Search experience to a much broader audience by expanding Google AI Mode to five new languages. After being limited to English for over six months, the tech giant announced on Monday that users can now access AI Mode in Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, and Brazilian Portuguese.
This update follows last month’s rollout of AI Mode in English to 180 new markets, after initially being tested in the U.S., U.K., and India. By adding popular global languages, Google is making sure more people can interact with AI-driven search in their native tongue.
“With this expansion, more people can now use AI Mode to ask complex questions in their preferred language, while exploring the web more deeply,” said Hema Budaraju, VP of Product Management at Google Search, in a blog post.
What is Google AI Mode?
First launched in March 2024 as an experiment for Google One AI Premium subscribers, Google AI Mode is the company’s response to AI search platforms like Perplexity and ChatGPT Search. The feature runs on a specialized version of Gemini 2.5, Google’s advanced multimodal AI model capable of reasoning and processing text, images, and context together.
With AI Mode, users don’t just get keyword-based answers — they can ask complex, conversational queries and receive detailed, context-rich results.
Advanced Features and Agentic Capabilities
In August, Google introduced agentic features within AI Mode, giving it the ability to handle real-world tasks. For example, AI Mode can now:
- Find and book restaurant reservations
- Soon, it will also support local service appointments
- Event ticket booking features are in development
Currently, these capabilities are limited to Google AI Ultra subscribers in the U.S., available through the “Agentic capabilities in AI Mode” experiment in Google Labs. The Ultra tier comes at a premium price of $249.99 per month.
How to Access Google AI Mode
At present, Google AI Mode is accessible through:
- A dedicated tab on the search results page
- A button in the search bar for quick activation
According to Logan Kilpatrick, Group Product Manager at Google DeepMind, the company is working toward making this AI-driven experience the default search mode in the near future.
The Controversy Around AI Mode and Website Traffic
While Google AI Mode promises a smarter and more interactive search journey, it has also sparked debate. Critics argue that AI-powered answers reduce clicks to publishers’ websites, as users may no longer feel the need to visit external sources.
Google, however, has denied these concerns. The company recently clarified that its AI Overviews and AI Mode are not intended to harm publishers’ traffic, but rather to enhance user experience by summarizing information.
Why This Expansion Matters
The expansion of Google AI Mode into five new languages is more than just a technical update—it’s a strategic move to dominate global AI-powered search. With Hindi and Indonesian covering millions of users in Asia, Japanese and Korean serving tech-savvy markets, and Brazilian Portuguese tapping into Latin America, Google is ensuring its AI ecosystem grows stronger worldwide.
Final Thoughts
The future of search is being reshaped by Google AI Mode. From multilingual support to advanced agentic features, Google is pushing hard to stay ahead in the AI race. As this AI-powered experience becomes more mainstream, users can expect a shift from traditional keyword search to intelligent, conversational discovery.
Whether this change benefits or disrupts the web ecosystem remains to be seen — but one thing is clear: Google AI Mode is here to redefine how we explore information online.
