Google has officially announced the biggest upgrade to its iconic Search bar in more than 25 years. The company revealed the new AI-powered Search experience during its Google I/O 2026 event, introducing smarter and more interactive ways for users to search online.
The updated Search experience is deeply integrated with Google’s Gemini AI technology and aims to make online searching more conversational, personalized, and intelligent. According to Google, the redesigned Search box is capable of handling longer natural-language queries and even supports uploads such as images, videos, files, and Chrome tabs.
AI-Powered Search Box Gets a Complete Makeover
The new Search field is now larger and smarter, allowing users to interact with Google in a way similar to AI chatbots. Instead of typing short keywords, users can now ask detailed questions and receive AI-generated responses with follow-up support.
Google says the Search experience will continue showing traditional website links and AI summaries, but the AI tools are now much more deeply integrated into the platform. The update is powered by Gemini 3.5 Flash, which is also becoming the default AI model in many Google services.

New AI Features Coming to Google Search
The upgraded Search platform introduces several advanced AI capabilities, including:
- Conversational AI search experience
- Ability to upload images, files, and videos directly into Search
- AI-powered suggestions while typing
- Interactive mini apps and live dashboards within results
- AI agents that can monitor information on behalf of users
- Personalized search experiences linked with Gmail and Google Photos
Google is also expanding its “Personal Intelligence” feature to nearly 200 countries and 98 languages.

Search Is Becoming More Like an AI Assistant
The company’s vision for Search is shifting from a simple search engine to a more advanced AI assistant. During the announcement, Google executives described this as a major evolution of Search, where users can ask complex questions, continue conversations, and receive context-aware answers.
Google also introduced AI agents capable of continuously scanning the web for updates related to topics like sports, finance, shopping, or apartment listings. Some of these premium AI-powered features may initially remain limited to paid subscribers.
Google’s Biggest Search Shift Since Launch
According to Google’s VP of Search, Elizabeth Reid, this marks the most significant change to the Search box since its original debut over two decades ago. The update highlights Google’s growing focus on artificial intelligence as competition in the AI search space intensifies.
With these new AI-powered capabilities, Google is aiming to transform how billions of users search, explore, and interact with information online.
