Snapdragon Hits 5GHz: Qualcomm Unveils Two New Chips That Could Change Flagship Phones

Qualcomm has officially unveiled two new flagship mobile platforms — the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 and Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 — marking a major step forward for premium Android smartphones.

The new platforms are built using an advanced 2nm process and feature Qualcomm’s custom Oryon CPU architecture. The Extreme version can reach a clock speed of up to 5GHz, which Qualcomm describes as the world’s first mobile CPU to reach that frequency.

But raw CPU speed isn’t the only headline. Qualcomm is also putting a major emphasis on on-device AI and agentic AI, gaming, camera processing and connectivity.

The goal is no longer simply to make smartphones faster — Qualcomm wants them to become more intelligent and capable of acting on the user’s behalf.

Two Flagship Chips, One Major Upgrade

Qualcomm is expanding its flagship Snapdragon lineup with two platforms instead of relying on a single top-tier chip.

Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6

The Extreme version is positioned as Qualcomm’s most powerful mobile platform and is designed for the highest-end Android smartphones.

According to Qualcomm, it delivers:

  • Up to 13% higher CPU performance
  • Up to 44% higher GPU performance
  • Up to 35% faster NPU performance
  • Up to 40% improved GPU power efficiency
  • Up to 33% better AI performance per watt
  • Oryon CPU speeds of up to 5GHz
  • Support for 8K video at 60fps
  • Support for 4K slow-motion video at 240fps

The chip also introduces Qualcomm’s Adreno Neural Fusion, which uses AI processing to enhance graphics and gaming experiences.

Standard Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Also Gets a Big Boost

The regular Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 is positioned below the Extreme model but still targets premium flagship smartphones.

It uses the same advanced 2nm manufacturing technology and Qualcomm Oryon CPU architecture.

The platform is designed to bring many of the Extreme model’s AI, gaming, imaging and connectivity capabilities to a wider range of high-end devices.

This two-chip strategy gives smartphone manufacturers more flexibility when designing flagship and premium devices.

AI Is the Real Story Behind the New Snapdragon

Qualcomm isn’t focusing only on benchmark numbers this generation.

The company is heavily promoting agentic AI, where AI systems can understand context, learn user preferences and potentially perform actions with less direct prompting.

The Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 features an upgraded Hexagon NPU and Qualcomm Sensing Hub designed to handle more AI workloads directly on the smartphone.

This can potentially improve:

  • AI assistants
  • Generative AI
  • Image and video processing
  • Personalised recommendations
  • On-device AI processing
  • Privacy-sensitive AI tasks

Qualcomm says the new architecture can enable more personalised AI experiences while keeping more processing on the device.

Gaming Gets an AI Upgrade Too

Gaming is another major focus.

The new Adreno GPU architecture is designed to deliver higher graphics performance, while Adreno Neural Fusion uses AI to improve visual quality and gaming efficiency.

Qualcomm is also introducing technologies aimed at helping smartphones deliver more immersive graphics without putting the entire workload on the GPU.

For gamers, this could translate into:

  • Higher frame rates
  • More detailed graphics
  • Better ray tracing
  • Improved power efficiency
  • Longer gaming sessions

Camera and Video Capabilities Get a Major Push

The new platforms are also designed to turn flagship smartphones into increasingly capable mobile cameras.

The Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 supports 8K video recording at 60fps and 4K slow motion at 240fps. Qualcomm is also highlighting AI-powered camera processing and Intelligent Pixel Control.

The company says its new imaging technologies can improve scene understanding and image quality while enabling more advanced video workflows directly on the smartphone.

Faster 5G and Wi-Fi Connectivity

Connectivity has received an upgrade as well.

The Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 includes Qualcomm’s X105 5G Modem-RF System, with peak download speeds of up to 14.8Gbps under Qualcomm’s stated conditions.

The platform also supports the FastConnect 8800 connectivity system, with claimed Wi-Fi speeds of up to 11.6Gbps.

This means future flagship phones using the platform could offer significantly faster wireless connectivity when compatible networks and conditions are available.

Which Phones Will Use the New Snapdragon Chips?

Several major smartphone manufacturers are preparing devices based on Qualcomm’s latest platforms.

Qualcomm says devices from brands including HONOR, iQOO, Motorola, OnePlus, OPPO, REDMI, RedMagic, vivo and Xiaomi will use the new Snapdragon platforms.

Motorola has already unveiled the Signature 27, powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6. The company describes it as its most advanced smartphone yet.

The Xiaomi 18 Pro is also among the early phones associated with the new Snapdragon generation, while other flagship devices are expected to follow.

Why the 5GHz Number Matters

A 5GHz CPU clock speed sounds impressive, but clock speed alone does not determine how fast a smartphone feels.

Actual performance depends on the complete architecture, number and type of CPU cores, cooling, software optimisation, memory, workload and power limits.

Still, the 5GHz milestone is significant because it shows how far mobile processor technology has advanced.

Qualcomm’s bigger pitch is the combination of:

2nm manufacturing + Oryon CPU + powerful Adreno GPU + Hexagon NPU + on-device AI.

The Next Generation of Android Flagships Is Coming

The new Snapdragon platforms are likely to become the foundation for a new generation of premium Android smartphones.

Instead of focusing only on faster processors, Qualcomm is positioning its latest chips around a broader idea — smartphones that can understand users, process AI locally, deliver console-like gaming graphics and handle increasingly sophisticated camera workloads.

Final Take

The Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 and Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 represent Qualcomm’s latest push toward faster and more intelligent smartphones.

The headline 5GHz CPU will grab attention, but the bigger change could come from the chips’ focus on agentic AI, on-device processing, gaming and advanced imaging.

With Motorola, Xiaomi, OnePlus and several other major brands preparing smartphones around the new platforms, the next generation of Android flagships could bring a noticeable jump in both performance and AI capabilities.
