iOS 27 Finally Lets You Set Different Volumes for Alarm and Ringtone

New Delhi: After years of waiting, Apple is finally bringing independent volume controls to the iPhone with iOS 27 – a feature Android users have enjoyed for over a decade. This update allows users to adjust the volume of ringtones, alarms, timers, and system sounds separately, instead of being tied to a single master setting. The new controls are located in the Settings app under “Sounds & Haptics” . Apple also added a “Match Ringtone Volume” toggle – when enabled, iOS behaves like before; when disabled, users can fine-tune each category independently.

The change was quietly announced during the WWDC 2026 keynote, which focused heavily on Apple Intelligence and Siri AI, but this audio upgrade addresses one of the oldest complaints from iPhone users.

What Independent Volume Controls Mean for You

Sound CategoryPreviouslyWith iOS 27
RingtoneLinked to master volumeSeparate control
AlarmLinked to master volumeSeparate control (except Wake-Up alarm)
TimerLinked to master volumeSeparate control
System Sounds (keyboard clicks, camera shutter, etc.)Linked to master volumeSeparate control

Apple clarified that the new alarm and timer controls do not apply to the “Wake-Up” alarm or certain special alarms that already have their own volume settings. The “Alerts & System Sounds” category includes message notifications, keyboard clicks, camera shutter effects, and similar system audio.

How It Works

  • Default behavior: When “Match Ringtone Volume” is ON, iOS works the same way as before – one master volume for ringtones, alerts, and alarms.
  • New flexibility: Turn OFF the toggle, and you can independently set:
    • Ringtone volume
    • Alarm volume
    • Timer volume
    • Alerts & system sounds volume

This brings the iPhone much closer to Android’s approach, where separate controls for alarm, notification, ringtone, and media playback have been standard for years.

Why This Matters

For years, iPhone users have struggled with the same problem: lowering the ringer volume also lowered alarm volume, leading to missed alarms. Or turning up notifications made the keyboard clicks too loud. With iOS 27, that frustration ends. You can now keep your alarm loud while keeping your ringtone subtle, or mute keyboard clicks without affecting incoming call alerts.

Availability

iOS 27 was introduced at WWDC 2026 alongside new Apple Intelligence features, Siri AI upgrades, Photos enhancements, and parental control tools. Apple has already released the developer beta, and the public beta is expected next month. The final stable version will roll out to all compatible iPhones in September 2026.
