WhatsApp is rolling out a new username feature that will allow users to chat without sharing their phone numbers. The company has already started global username reservations, letting users secure their preferred unique name before the feature fully launches later this year. This optional feature is designed to give users greater control over their privacy, especially when connecting with new contacts.

How to Reserve Your WhatsApp Username
To reserve a username, update WhatsApp to the latest version and navigate to Settings > Account > Username. Choose a unique username between 3 to 35 characters. If your preferred name is unavailable, WhatsApp offers a built-in username generator with suggestions. Creators, businesses, and organizations can also claim their existing Instagram or Facebook usernames for a consistent identity across Meta platforms.

Privacy Features and Key Benefits
Once the feature is live, your phone number will not be visible when you message someone or a business for the first time. There will be no public username directory or search suggestions, meaning others must know your exact username to contact you. For added security, WhatsApp is introducing an optional “username key” – an extra layer that contacts must enter along with your username to message you. The feature is rolling out gradually over the coming months, and users will receive an in-app notification when it becomes available in their country.
